Reflexology is a therapeutic practice based on the principle that specific areas of the feet and hands—called reflex areas—correspond to glands, organs, and systems throughout the body. By applying targeted pressure with the thumbs and fingers, reflexology helps release tension, improve circulation, and restore energy flow.
While ancient forms of reflexology date back to Egypt and China, the modern practice stems from research by William H. Fitzgerald in the early 1900s on “zone therapy.” Today, reflexology is widely recognized as a natural way to support the body’s healing processes and overall well-being.
How Reflexology Works
Each foot contains about 7,200 nerve endings—making them powerful indicators of the body’s health. By releasing tension in these areas, reflexology encourages waste removal, promotes nerve function, and helps restore balance across the body’s systems. Unlike massage, which focuses on muscle tissue, reflexology works with reflex points that correspond to organs and systems.
Benefits of Reflexology
Regular reflexology sessions may provide relief from:
-
Digestive tract disorders
-
Migraines, stress, and tension headaches
-
Sports-related injuries
-
PMS and menstrual discomfort
-
Stress-related conditions
-
Constipation
-
Back pain
-
Multiple sclerosis
-
Hormonal imbalances
Reflexology is also a supportive companion to cancer care, offering relaxation and comfort during treatment.
What to Expect
A typical session lasts 30–60 minutes and begins with a short consultation and health history survey. You’ll recline fully clothed on a massage table, shoes removed, while the reflexologist gently applies light pressure to reflex points in your feet (and sometimes hands). This process helps increase circulation, ease congestion, relieve pain, and promote deep relaxation.
